Ankle and Foot Pain

Ankle/Foot pain is usually a matter of control, or loss of control. The foot during walking is at the mercy of the function of the lower limb. A great deal of joint cooperation needs to occur for the foot to function properly. In addition, there can be intrinsic malalignment that can occur or functional adaptation.

Active Spine & Sport Therapies‘ overall goal with the foot is to restore stability to the foot and mobility to the toes and ankle. There are a many conditions including surgery that can be causing your pain. Our care will be tailored to your specific problem and will includethe following:

  •         Rapid pain relief
  •         Rapid control of swelling
    (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
  •         Taping and bracing as needed
  •         Patient education with proactive patient involvement
  •         Development of home treatment program
  •         Joint and soft tissue mobilization to restore motion
  •         Stability strength training
  •         Mobility exercises (range of motion)
  •         Hands on therapy

Chest and Ribs Pain

The doctors at Active Spine & Sport Therapy knows there are multiple conditions, many serious, and a variety of symptoms that are not always easy to sort out which can be related to pain in the chest or ribs. Don’t fool with these symptoms, see your doctor.

Now for the good news. There are numerous musculoskeletal conditions that can cause pain in the upper back (thoracic area) ribs, and chest and are easily treated with therapy. Pain coming from the muscles, ribs, or cartilage of the ribs is common. Musculoskeletal pain presents as atypical chest pain that is reproducible by springing of the chest, movement of the chest wall during deep respirations, movement of the limbs or by direct pressure. The causes are many but often consist of trauma, reaching far into flexion or extension, or inflammation of the cartilage. There are movements or injuries that can cause strain to the ligaments and joints where the ribs meet the spine (costo-transverse joints).   People can wake up with an injury to these joints (a costo-transverse sprain).  Sometimes it is caused by an awkward sleeping position or caused by turning in bed, or something that happened the day before but was too mild to cause significant pain right away.

For some people the pain can become recurring and ongoing, and for these people the problem can be a source of great frustration. Therapy can often give the relief the patient seeks.

When our doctors see patients with chronic spine, chest or rib pain there are other factors to consider such as a slouched posture with forward drawn shoulders. This is often seen in people who are generally unfit with:

  •      poor thoracic core muscles
  •      increased thoracic curvature (kyphosis)
  •      sedentary occupations
  •      carrying loads for prolonged times
  •      scoliosis of the mid-back

To help these patients in the long term, apart from treating the underlying spinal problem with specific therapy, it is extremely important to address the postural problem and core muscle weakness.

Hip Pain

As we get older, our body starts to complain in various places; one of those being our hips.

Hip pain can stop you from doing the activities that you enjoy; walking, running, golf, tennis or simply sitting or climbing stairs. Hip pain is a common problem, and it can be confusing because there are many causes. One in seven Americans reports significant hip pain in any six week period. Hip pain accounts for 6 million doctor visits a year. The hip joint works functionally with the knee joint. They are among the largest joints in your body and are subjected to tremendous forces (strain) during daily activities.

Hip pain refers to pain that occurs in and around your hip. Hip pain can be caused by problems with your hip joint. This type of hip pain tends to be felt on the inside of your hip or in your groin. Hip pain can also be caused by problems with the muscle, ligaments, tendons and other structures that support your hip joint. Hip pain associated with these problems tends to occur on the outside of the hip or the upper thigh. Hip pain can sometimes be caused by diseases and conditions in other areas of your body. This type of pain is called referred pain. Most hip pain can be treated successfully with proper diagnosis and therapy.

It is important to do a detailed examination to assess the cause of your symptoms so that appropriate treatment can be directed at the underlying problem. Look at strength, range of motion, and function with the knee and lower limb to decide on the best course of treatment.

At Active Spine & Sport Therapy, our rehab program will be tailored to your specific problem and will include the following:

  •      Rapid pain relief
  •      Restoration of proper function to normalize weight bearing through the joints
  •      Patient education with proactive patient involvement
  •      Development of home treatment program
  •      Joint and soft tissue mobilization to restore motion
  •      Strength training
  •      Mobility exercises (range of motion)

Don’t let the pain stop you in your every day life. To make an appointment with one of the Active Spine & Sport doctors, call 817-332-5353 or schedule online! For more information, LIKE our Facebook page.

Knee Pain

Knee pain can impede the simplest act such as walking, bending, or just rising from a chair. Golfing, hiking, or even gardening may be out of the question…causing millions of people with suffer with pain in the knees.

Your knees rank among your largest joints. They support your body’s weight and they must work in close coordination with the hips to provide the mobility most people take for granted until injury, arthritis, or other problems interfere. One in 5 Americans age 60 and older has experienced significant knee pain on most days over the last six weeks. Each year, Americans make about 15 million visits to doctors for knee pain.

Physically, your knees and hips are closely interdependent, located as they are at either end of the thighbone. This proximity means the angle of your hip affects the pressure on your knee and vice versa. A hip disorder may cause knee pain, and knee disorders can aggravate hip problems.

There are many conditions, including post operative pain, that can be causing your symptoms. At Active Spine & Sport Therapy, our care is tailored to your specific problem and will include the following:

  •        Rapid pain relief
  •        Rapid control of swelling (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
  •        Restoration of proper function to normalize weight bearing through the joints
  •        Patient education with proactive patient involvement
  •        Development of home treatment program
  •        Joint and soft tissue mobilization to restore motion
  •        Stability and strength training
  •        Mobility exercises (range of motion)
  •        Hands on therapy

People live longer than they used to, so joints need to stay strong and healthy through those additional years. Knees are subject to repetitive trauma — wear and tear — as you age, and you can traumatize them further if you increase your physical activity suddenly. Depending on the cause of your pain, the solution can be a set of exercises designed to strengthen and stretch the muscles that support the joint, taking some of the stress off the joint itself. Call 817-332-5353 to schedule an evaluation with one of the Active Spine & Sport doctors to learn what we can do to help.

Shoulder Pain and Care

The shoulder is the most movable joint in the body. However, it is an unstable joint because of the range of motion allowed. It is easily subject to injury because the ball of the upper arm is larger than the shoulder socket that holds it. To remain stable, the shoulder must be anchored by its muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Some shoulder problems arise from the disruption of these soft tissues as a result of injury or from overuse or underuse of the shoulder. Other problems arise from a degenerative process in which tissues break down and no longer function well.

Shoulder pain is an extremely common complaint. It is important to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms so that appropriate treatment can be directed at the cause. If you are unsure of the cause of your shoulder pain, or if you do not know the specific treatment recommendations for your condition, you should seek medical attention. Treatment of these conditions must be directed at the specific cause of your problem.

You should consider medical evaluation if your have any of the following symptoms:

  •   Inability to carry objects or use the arm
  •   Injury that causes deformity of the joint
  •   Shoulder pain that occurs at night or while resting
  •   Shoulder pain that persists beyond a few days
  •   Inability to raise the arm
  •   Swelling or significant bruising around the joint or arm
  •   Signs of an infection, including fever, redness, warmth
  •   Any other unusual symptoms

Shoulders are very complex. Rehabilitation is a team effort between the patient and the therapist. The therapist provides expertise and guidance. The patient supplies the sweat. There are a myriad of conditions that can be causing your symptoms. Our shoulder program will be tailored to your specific problem and will include the following:

  • Rapid pain relief
  • Patient education with proactive patient involvement
  • Development of home treatment program
  • Joint and soft tissue mobilization to restore motion
  • Graded stretching and strengthening

Fight the Cold

Active Spine & Sport welcomes this cold weather with open arms! We love everything about being outside, moving around and feeling refreshed! However, our immune systems DON’T welcome the cold so much. Hence: Cold Season.

But no fears! Active Spine & Sport and the fitness section of Women’s Day Magazine bring you some all natural cures to help fight off the common cold!

1. Vitamin C. The most popular in the Vitamin family, Vitamin C prevents a cold, but only if you take it before you’re exposed to the virus. One study found that athletes who took C supplements daily slashed their risk of developing a cold in half. Try 500 mg twice daily during cold season.

2. Ginseng. This helps prevent a cold, but like vitamin C, you have to take it well ahead of time. Cold-FX, which contains an extract of ginseng, was found to reduce the incidence of colds by 25 percent when taken twice daily over a four-month period.

3. Echinacea. Shorten a cold’s duration and possibly prevent you from catching one. Try one 500 mg capsule daily as soon as symptoms arise or whenever someone around you gets sick.

4. Zinc. Zinc can shorten a cold’s duration and make symptoms less severe. Studies suggest sucking on a lozenge every 3 to 4 hours, starting as soon as you have symptoms.

5. Vitamin D. Just as important as Vitamin C, the D vitamin keeps your immune system strong. If your levels are normal, then taking extra D is unlikely to help, but since so many people are lacking, it’s a good idea to ask your doc for a blood test.

And of course, quite possible the BEST way to avoid any infection before it hits: Wash your hands. Your hands touch more things than you’d care to know…including your eyes, mouth, etc. Keep them clean!

Interferential / Electrical Stimulation Therapy

There are many different variations of Interferential/Electrical Stimulation Therapy and we have found this to be the most effective for pain, muscle spasm and joint irritation. Electrode pads are placed on the skin to allow the electrical impulses to criss-cross at the problem area. These impulses reduce inflammation by causing certain chemical reactions underneath the skin and reduce muscle spasm by “pushing the reset button” on tight muscles.

Interferential stimulation is a type of electrical stimulation that uses paired electrodes of 2 independent circuits carrying high-frequency and medium-frequency alternating currents. The superficial electrodes are aligned on the skin around the affected area. It is believed that IFS permeates the tissues more effectively and, with less unwanted stimulation of cutaneous nerves, is more comfortable than transcutaneous electrical stimulation. Interferential stimulation has been investigated as a technique to reduce pain, improve range of motion, or promote local healing following various tissue injuries. There are no standardized protocols for the use of interferential therapy; the therapy may vary according to the frequency of stimulation, the pulse duration, treatment time, and electrode-placement technique.

Another technique Active Spine & Sport Therapy uses is ultrasound. Inside the sound head of the ultrasound applicator is a crystal that vibrates very quickly to produce very high frequency sound waves that are then directed into the tissue. These sound waves then act similarly to snow plows and mechanically push away inflammation and promote healing.

Wobble Board Exercise

At Active Spine & Sport Therapy, we know that treatment is not the same every visit; it is specific for the condition each time. As patients recover their symptoms will change, so treatment changes accordingly to be as specific as possible and get the quickest results. Patients should be given specific stretches and exercises to emphasize strengths and minimize weaknesses in mechanics and functionality to reduce recurrence of symptoms.

That is why one of the treatments we recommend to patients is Wobble Board Exercises.

These exercises work primarily on balance and joint position sense or ‘proprioception”. Large strong muscles aren’t of much use if they don’t turn on and off at the right time and are not coordinated well. Put a bodybuilder on a unicycle and those big muscles aren’t much good if they can’t be controlled. Wobble board exercises build coordination and balance to help train your muscles how and when turn on and off. Properly coordinated muscles take stress off of joints and reduce the likelihood of re-injury.

Wobble boards are most commonly used in the rehabilitation of ankle injuries such as ankle sprains, although they should also be used for other lower leg and knee injuries. They can also be used for upper limb injuries, especially the shoulder. This is important in people involved in throwing or similar activities.

These exercises are best performed in bare feet and on a soft floor such as a carpet or a rug or mat, rather than a hard floor such as wood. If you are new to this, ensure there is a wall or something close by that you can reach for if you loose your balance.
